Happiness is something we all seek. We want that feeling of fulfillment and a life filled with pleasureful moments. But what is happiness exactly ? It seems that everyone has his own definition. In will try to reflect on these life puzzles to the best of my ability. Knowing beforehand that there is no one answer, but only a couple of thoughts that we can ponder about. That’s why we compiled a list of happiness quotes from reknown thought leaders below.
What famous authors say about happiness
Many philosophers, authors, speakers, psychologists, scientists, tried to define what is happiness using different methodologies from neurosciences to philosophical expansion. We still not sure what is it exactly because like we said before, there is no absolute definition. Here are some quotes from famous authors that describe the qualities of happiness:
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: Therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notion unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.
MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS”
“It is the paradox of life that the way to miss pleasure is to seek it first. The very first condition of lasting happiness is that a life should be full of purpose, aiming at something outside self. As a matter of experience, we find that true happiness comes in seeking other things, in the manifold activities of life, in the healthful outgoing of all human powers.
“No man, with a man’s heart in him gets far on his way without some bitter, soul-searching disappointment. Happy is he who is brave enough to push on to another stage of the journey.
JOHN MASON BROWN”
“There is only one way to happiness, and that is cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.
“conveniences or pleasures that occur every day, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom to a man in the course of his life.
“If you have nothing else to do, look about you and see if there isn’t something close at hand that you can improve! It may make you wealthy, though it is more likely that it will make you happy.
GEORGE MATTHEW ADAMS”
Can you be happy starting today ?
Happiness is truly a state of mind. We can control our thoughts and therefore control how we feel about ourselves. If we can change our perception and philosophy about life, we can create this sense oh happiness. Abraham Lincoln best said it :
“Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
You cannot wait for someone to make you happy or for circumstances to change. What if they don’t change, we can’t count on that. Most people say, I will be happy when I get my degree, I will be happy when my children are grown and independent, I will be happy when the business provides more income. Oh No ! We don’t want to get stuck in that kind of mentality, it’s a trap, I Know because I’ve been there for a long time. Then I realized that happiness is a decision, a well thought of definite decision.
I always thought that I can’t possibly be happy until I get what I want (my goals and dreams). Here is what I discovered from this philosophy : You can’t have the required stamina to go for big dreams if you are not happy along the way, throughout the whole journey, you will burnout before you even start. We must enjoy the small successes and feel good about our overall progress, because that’s what will give you the energy and drive for more successes.
We can decide today to be happy, not because we want to fool ourselves, but because we deserve it, everyday, every month, every year. That’s why it’s important to choose a path for your future life, and just follow it. The sense of purpose and self-direction has a lot to do with the state of our spirit. When we lose that sense, that’s when sorrowful feelings start creeping into our soul.
